Belleville and Prince Edward County 8/27/2018

My actual title for this post ought to be “Taking It Slow and Easy” because that is exactly what we’re doing at this point in our trip.  Our only commitment of time is to be in Clayton on 9/1 to meet up with Roy and Karen Shaw and that’s a fairly easy day cruise.  So, we’ve been in chill mode and taking time to do the extra stuff .  We booked a week at Crate Marina in Belleville, not so much because Belleville is a great spot to hang, but because it has rental cars available and we were excited about touring PEC.

Belleville

Crate Marina had everything we could  have needed and was a perfect location to see what Belleville had to offer.  OK, there’s not a lot in Belleville, but the town is really working on it.  Compared to Trenton, it is wonderful.  The downtown area is getting a makeover, roads are torn up with brick sections being laid for an old town feel, old buildings are being renovated and stores and restaurants  are opening up.  We wandered around and admired the old churches, bought some goodies at the Farmer’s Market and took a free bus ride to all the Touristy spots.  Maggie enjoyed some good butt sniffing time at the nearby dog park and we all had fun watching the 5K Foam Run.  It was great seeing whole families, groups of friends and colleagues out playing in the foam and eventual mud.

Prince Edward County

But the best thing about Belleville is its proximity to Prince Edward County (PEC or The County).  We rented a car for 3 days while in Belleville and thoroughly enjoyed touring and tasting our way across this beautiful countryside.  Lake Ontario, to the south, helps moderate the climate allowing for the proliferation of vineyards in The County.  We managed to check out several along with a few breweries.

The highlight for Maggie was Sandhill Provential Park, the world’s largest baymouth barrier dune formation, on Lake Ontario.
There’s not many things better than playing on the beach especially when its fresh water.

We enjoyed our time in PEC so much we decided to bring the boat over and spend some time just getting to know Picton.  We’ll be in Picton for a few days.  I’ll let you know what we find here when I post again.

In memory of my brother- Happy birthday, Den.  Life can be so short, we live and enjoy it while we can.
