Midland, On. July 30- Aug2

I want to get one last post in before we leave Midland and are in the NO WiFi zone again. We planned to stay here 3 nights (pay for 2 get 3rd free) but have decided instead to stay a fourth night as well. Ken, the manager at Bay Port Yachting Center, is renown for his 2 hour seminars where he guides you through the dos and don’ts of Georgian Bay. Unfortunately he was unable to give one on the 3 nights we planned to be here, but he’ll give one tonight and so we’ll stay.

Beside all the regular chores that we do when hooked to power and water, our biggie was getting the boat quick hauled. This is just a matter of putting her in a sling, hauling her out and then dropping her back in. We wanted to take a look at the props since we knew we had found some rocks on the Rideau and the Trent. We just wanted to see how bad the props really were.

We decided the props weren’t too bad and since we are heading into the land of rock, we might as well wait to have them worked on.

Tim also wanted to remove the props from the bow thruster that went kaput a while back. The motor on the bow thruster died on us and we won’t get her fixed until we haul out for winter, but the props keep spinning as we cruise. The whirling noise that they make is pretty irritating.

The last reason for the haul out was a photo taken by friends on Cat -N-Dogs while we were in the Big Chute. As we were being transported across the road, they took a phot showing a huge wad of weeds attached to our starboard shaft.

Hmmm, that might slow us down.

Tim has to use a knife to cut the wad off.

Midland is known for it’s many murals that decorate the town. Here are a few.

Our time here in Midland is over. A group of us met with Ken last night for a wonderful seminar on Georgian Bay. Our charts are marked up with safe routes and beautiful anchorages. We’re as ready as we’re going to be. This next leg of our trip promises to be a highlight of our adventure. Lots of photos will be heading your way when we can find enough WiFi to post.

  1. Glad to see those props don’t look too bad, nice to have that confirmed. I wonder how long you’ve been carrying that wad of weeds? They could certainly be from the Rideau, couldn’t they? Looking forward to updates from Georgian Bay! Where will you be the last 2 weeks of August … I have a window of unscheduled time … just saying!

    1. Yea, we were very pleasantly surprised at how good the props were. It looks like the weeds got hung up on the zinc and then just spun themselves into a wad. Looks like we’ll be somewhere in the North Channel end of August. Want to drive our truck up and meet us?????
