Picton- It’s not just for cruisers. June 8,9

Warning!!! This post has nothing to do with cruising. It’s all about knitting. Feel free to move on if that’s not your cup of tea.

One morning as we drank our coffee and discussed places we wanted to stop as we headed west, we talked about Picton. Picton is a small town in Prince Edward County, Ontario. It is an island that sits on the northern coast of Lake Ontario, with the Bay of Quite on the northern coast. We went to Picton twice last year. Once by rental car from Belleville we explored the many vineyards and breweries in the County and then we came by boat and stayed at Picton Harbor Marina. We really enjoyed the small town feel and friendliness of the area. But the one thing that drew me to come back was the yarn store.

Walking through the small town last year, I found Rosehaven Yarn Store. I’d been knitting on the boat for a while, mainly chemo caps to donate, and wanted to try my hand at something different. This was the perfect place for me to have someone spend the time I needed to figure out what that “something different” would be. I had considered knitting socks, but they seemed very daunting and I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to tackle such a project by myself on the boat. The woman working at the shop was wonderful. I came out with my first hank of sock yarn, needles and thread for a beautiful wrap.

Last year, working on the my first pair of socks with my girl.

The shawl I made from bamboo yarn I bought last year at Rosehaven.
I loved the changing patterns.

Anyway, my main inspiration for going back to Picton was the yarn shop. I’ve been working on a top for me, but found myself very confused when it came to the neckline. I figured someone at Rosehaven would be able to talk me through it. Besides, I wanted to get more sock yarn and see if they had anything else that grabbed me. Once we got docked and settled in, we headed to town. Tim and Maggie to the 555 Brewery and I to Rosehaven. Lesley Snyder, the owner, was fantastic. She took the time to help me work out my problem and find more wonderful yarn for future projects. Rosehaven has a Tuesday night Knitting Group that gathers at the store to knit together. I really wanted to go, unfortunately my voice gave out on me that afternoon and I couldn’t see myself joining a group when I couldn’t talk.

I finally finished the top thanks to the generous help from Lesley

So, if any of you cruisers like enjoy needle craft, checkout Lesley’s website. She also does knitting retreats and teaches felting. Cool stuff.

I’ll have enough to keep me busy for a while.

  1. June – your top is not only very attractive in itself, but the model had a very professional pose!

Was thrilled to hear that you would be stopping by this fall!!!

    1. Not so good. I may scrap it and do something else. It’s just not making me feel warm and fuzzy.

  2. Love your shawl and your top. the neckline looks beautiful. Can’t wait to see it in person. It the colorful shawl a felted one?

  4. I wish we could have joined you in Picton. I didn’t have a voice at that time either, but Ray would have loved the brewery! The finished top looks GREAT!

    1. Picton was sweet. You would have loved it too. Sorry you got the boat bug as well. I hope Ray stayed clear of it.
