Road trip to Norfolk and NY. 6/4/2018

We returned Saturday afternoon from our 4 day road trip and after a day of maintenance and chores, we are putzing north again.

Tuesday night we enjoyed a wonderful dinner with Tim’s cousin, Mindy and her husband, Mark.  It was great seeing them again and getting to know them better.

We left on Wednesday, May 30 in our rental car for a long slog of a road trip.  We needed to get to Chesapeake, Va to pick up our truck and then get it to Brewerton, NY where we will use it to drive back home this winter.  So after the 4 1/2 hr drive to Chesapeake, we took both the rental and the truck north.  We made it just past DC before stopping for the night.  Thursday got us to Winter Harbor Marina, Brewerton.  Now we could slow down and do some site seeing.

Since we were near the Erie Canal, we just had to check out some of the locks.  Below are some of the photos we took.  At this time of year, there isn’t a lot of traffic; it will be picking up soon though.

Leaving Winter Harbor, we met a new friend.
Lock 19, Frankfort, NY

The lock has rope lines that you can grab, also metal pipes that you can wrap a line around. Sailboats are to lower their masts due to the low fixed bridges.

One of the lock men at Lock 19 told us that we needed to see Lock 17 one Little Falls.  It raises or lowers you over 40’.

On our way back, we thought we’d drop in on some looper friends at Shady Harbor Marina, New Bethlehem, NY.  Unfortunately the crew of Sea Jamm and Phantom had gone to Albany for the day.  We were in luck though that our old buddies, Rick and Mary, Exhale, were at Half Moon Bay Marina, Croton-0n-Hudson, Ny and were available for dinner.  So we booked our hotel for the night near by and enjoyed another fun evening with them.

We returned to Baltimore on Saturday and temps in the 80’s.  The rain started early evening and continued all night. On Sunday, long pants and long sleeves were my attire for the day as the rain persisted.  This morning we woke to temps in the mid 50s.  WHAAAAAAT?!  Just when Ithought I could stow my cold weather clothes, I need them again.  I wont complain though since Texas has been having 90 degree weather for a while.

The rain stopped overnight and now the sun is trying to peek out as we leave Baltimore.
Floats and flags mark fish traps as we leave Baltimore.

Now we are cruising north to Bohemia Bay Yacht Club for the night.  Tomorrow night we will be in Delaware City.  Wednesday we should be cruising down the Delaware River to Cape May.  After that, it will be a major weather watch as we look for good conditions to run outside of NJ.  Wish us luck.
