9/8/2017. Harvey, Irma, Juan oh my!

I am way behind in blogging and this will still not be a full one.  As I type this, we are on I 20 heading east toward New Bern, NC.  It’s been a crazy storm filled couple of weeks.

We arrived in New Bern on August 20 just in time for Kitty and Bill Chalfont’s visit.  We drank champagne on the sun deck while watching the eclipse and made some road trips to Beaufort, Oriental and Atlantic Beach.  We also spent time exploring New Bern and its historic areas.  Loved the Fireman’s Museum and enjoyed the Tyron Palace.

Maggie is ready for the watch party.

But the big topic of conversation was Harvey.  Kitty and Bill also have a house in Clear Lake Shores and with Harvey barreling down on Texas, we were all watching and wondering what precautions we needed to take.  Great friends back home secured areas outside our homes, and we debated whether anything needed to be done for the lowest level of the houses.  Our house is on one of the highest lots on the island and we felt pretty good that water would not make it into our garage.  Kitty and Bill are not so high and Kitty has a cute little reproduction Porsche sitting in their garage.  Could Harvey bring water that high?  Would it?  Surely not. Right?  Ugg.  We only wish.  Kitty and Bill flew back to their home in Midland on the 26th as Harvey took aim for Rockport.  We’ll, I won’t rehash what you already know happened.  Kitty and Bill did get water in their downstairs and garage as did so many others.  While our little island did suffer damage from Harvey, we were spared the devastation that so many others endured and still struggle to overcome.  Even though we came through completely unscathed, we felt the strong pull to go home and see friends.  We rented a car and drove 2 days to get home on the night of the 1st.

OMG, such a great feeling to be back in our house and to see so many great friends.  After being gone for 10 months, it was a wonderful reminder of why we love living in CLS.  So many people helping each other out and sharing the load.  Unfortunately, Irma is following Harvey and is making a direct aim for Florida.  She is wobbling around and keeping those of us with concerns in the Carolinas guessing.  Tim and I decided that our smart choice was to head back to New Bern and get the boat ready for potential tropical storm strength winds.  So we closed the house back up and headed out yesterday.  Tomorrow we will secure the boat, watch the storm and think of friends and family in the path.  Be safe.

Looking at Jarboe Bayou form in front of our house. The STOP sign is on the corner of our lot.
